Son approche a toujours \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00ab\u00a0ascendante\u00a0\u00bb. Que ce soit un film, un jeu vid\u00e9o, une bande dessin\u00e9e ou un roman, c\u2019est d\u2019abord l\u2019\u0153uvre qui nourrit sa r\u00e9flexion. Formaliste et cognitiviste beaucoup plus qu\u2019herm\u00e9neute, plus int\u00e9ress\u00e9 par la r\u00e9ception que par la production, il s\u2019efforce de comprendre comment l&rsquo;\u0153uvre est comprise et comment l&rsquo;\u00e9motion est ressentie. Cela explique son int\u00e9r\u00eat marqu\u00e9 pour un genre populaire comme l\u2019horreur qui exacerbe la plus vieille et la plus forte \u00e9motion ressentie par l\u2019homme, \u00e0 savoir la peur (dixit Lovecraft). Si le jeu vid\u00e9o a pris beaucoup de place dans ses recherches, c\u2019est bien parce qu\u2019il reste une machine \u00e0 faire penser, \u00e0 faire agir et \u00e0 faire \u00e9prouver. Ses recherches portent sur l&rsquo;immersion et les \u00e9cologies affectives, des sujets au c\u0153ur de sa th\u00e8se de doctorat et examin\u00e9s plus en d\u00e9tail dans <i>States of Immersion Across Media<\/i> (co-dirig\u00e9 avec Philippe B\u00e9dard et Alanna Thain, Amsterdam University Press, 2025). Il a publi\u00e9 de nombreux ouvrages sur les d\u00e9fis actuels de l&rsquo;historiographie des jeux vid\u00e9o en \u00e9tudiant des genres sp\u00e9cifiques tels que les <i>visual novels<\/i>, les jeux d&rsquo;horreur et les jeux de tir \u00e0 la premi\u00e8re personne. Dans <i>The Media Snatcher<\/i> (MIT Press, 2019), Therrien m\u00e8ne une \u00e9tude comparative de la \u00a0TurboGrafx-16 \/ PC Engine en confrontant les perspectives am\u00e9ricaines et japonaises de cette plateforme. Tout au long de sa collaboration avec le \u00ab Laboratoire universitaire d&rsquo;observation et de documentation des jeux vid\u00e9o \u00bb (LUDOV), il a particip\u00e9 \u00e0 deux projets de recherche subventionn\u00e9s, l&rsquo;un sur les genres vid\u00e9oludiques et l&rsquo;autre sur la critique de jeu. Il enseigne l\u2019histoire et l\u2019esth\u00e9tique du jeu vid\u00e9o, le game design, et les m\u00e9thodologies en animation pour le programme en Art et science de l\u2019animation de l\u2019\u00c9cole de Design \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 Laval. Il enseigne \u00e9galement le cin\u00e9ma japonais et chinois, et la litt\u00e9rature et culture japonaises au D\u00e9partement d\u2019\u00e9tudes est-asiatiques de l\u2019Universit\u00e9 de Montr\u00e9al.
